Why You’ll Love This Dip
- Quick and Easy: This coconut dip recipe is incredibly straightforward, requiring only a few simple ingredients and no heat! You just mix everything in a bowl and adjust the tastes to your preference. It is so simple, you'll have it ready just 5 minutes.
- Versatile: One of the best things about this coconut dip is its versatility. You can enjoy it with a variety of savory snacks and even fruits.
Ingredients You’ll Need to Make Coconut Dip
- Coconut Cream: This is the key ingredient in our coconut dip recipe. It is what gives the dip its rich, creamy texture and full-bodied coconut flavor. It’s much thicker than coconut milk and usually has the consistency of softened butter at room temperature, which makes it a fantastic ingredient for easy and flavorful dips!
- Fish Sauce: It adds a hint of umami that balances the sweetness of the other ingredients. If you prefer, you can substitute it with soy sauce.
- Maple Syrup: This natural sweetener adds a touch of earthy sweetness to the dip. You can also use honey as an alternative.
- Lime: The juice of fresh lime adds a tangy note that cuts through the creaminess of the dip, making it taste lighter and more refreshing.
- Garlic: A finely minced clove of garlic adds a subtle savory note that compliments the sweet and tangy flavors of the dip.
- Desiccated Unsweetened Coconut: This dry finely shredded coconut gets mixed into the dip for an extra boost of coconut flavor and a slightly chewy texture.
- Onion Seeds: These are optional, but they make a beautiful garnish and add a hint of oniony flavor that plays well with the other ingredients in the dip.
How to Make Coconut Dip (Step by Step)
Making this incredible coconut dip recipe at home is super easy and will give you great results every single time. Here's how to make it step by step:
Add Coconut Cream and Lime – Start by adding the coconut cream to a large bowl. Now, squeeze fresh lime into the coconut cream and stir it well to mix the two ingredients.
Add Other Ingredients – Next, finely chop garlic and add it to the cream and lime mixture. Include a splash of maple syrup and fish sauce for a balance of sweet and salty flavors. Remember, fish sauce is quite strong and salty so if you're adjusting the recipe, do so sparingly.
Adjust Consistency – Stir in one tablespoon of dried shredded unsweetened coconut to thicken your dip and add texture. If you prefer a thicker consistency, feel free to add more.
(Optional) Add Onion Seeds – For an extra twist, consider adding half a teaspoon of onion seeds to your dip. This will enhance the flavor and give it a slightly spicy edge.
Serve – Finally, serve your dip with your favorite snacks and enjoy!
Joyce’s Tips For Making the Best Coconut Dip
- Use Fresh Ingredients – For the best tasting coconut dip, use fresh ingredients like lime juice and garlic. Fresh ingredients will provide a brighter flavor profile and can make a big difference in the final taste.
- Balance the Flavors – Coconut dip is all about balancing flavors. When adding the fish sauce and maple syrup, do so gradually and taste as you go. This way, you can adjust the saltiness and sweetness to your preference.
- Add Texture with Desiccated Shredded Coconut – The addition of dry shredded unsweetened coconut not only thickens the dip but also adds texture. If you prefer a thicker dip, feel free to add more.
- Add Mayonnaise: To make this dip even creamier, I like to sometimes add 1-2 tablespoons of mayo to it.
- Experiment with Optional Ingredients – Don't be afraid to experiment with optional ingredients like onion seeds. They can add an extra layer of flavor and spice to your coconut dip.
Serving Suggestions
This coconut dip is incredibly versatile and can be paired with a variety of dishes. Here are some serving suggestions to get you started:
- Chips: This combo is a match made in snack heaven. The crunchiness of the chips perfectly complements the creamy texture of the coconut dip. It's a great option for a quick snack or for entertaining guests.
- Wraps: Add a dollop of coconut dip to your favorite wrap for an extra burst of flavor. Whether it's a chicken wrap, a veggie wrap, or a breakfast burrito, this dip will take it to the next level.
- Deep Fried Crispy Snacks: Deep fried snacks like spring rolls and coconut dip are a perfect pair. The rich, creamy dip balances out the crispiness of the snacks, making for a satisfying and delicious treat.
- Curries: Coconut dip is a great accompaniment to a variety of curries. It adds a creamy, cooling element that complements the spices in the curry.
- Chicken Pakoras: These Indian-style fritters are delicious on their own, but they're even better when dipped in coconut sauce. The dip adds a creamy contrast to the savory, crispy pakoras.
- Crispy Buttermilk Popcorn Chicken: This dish is a crowd-pleaser, and it's even better with coconut dip. The dip adds a sweet, creamy element that perfectly complements the crispy, savory chicken.
Recipe Variation Ideas
This delicious coconut dip recipe is so flavorful and easy to make, you'll want to try out some of these delicious variations! Here are some great ideas:
- Fruity: If you're a fan of fruit dips, try adding some mashed banana or pineapple to the mix in place of the garlic. The tropical tastes of these fruits pair perfectly with the coconut cream, creating a dessert dip that's perfect for strawberries, blueberries, or apple slices.
- Make it Creamier: For those who enjoy a rich, savory flavor, add ½ cup of cream cheese to the coconut dip. The cream cheese adds a wonderful tanginess that contrasts beautifully with the sweet coconut and maple syrup.
- Boost the Coconut: If you're a coconut lover, add an extra tablespoon of toasted coconut flakes to the dip. This not only intensifies the coconut flavor but also adds a lovely crunch to the creamy dip.
- Add a Whipped Topping: For an extra fluffy and light texture, omit the garlic, fold in a cup of cool whip or whipped topping at the end. This transforms the dip into a light and airy dessert that's perfect for dipping cookies or vanilla wafers.
Frequently Asked Questions
You can adjust the sweetness of this dip by adding more maple syrup. The recipe calls for 2 tablespoons of maple syrup, but you can add more if you prefer a sweeter dip. Remember, it is always easier to add more sweetness than to take it away, so add slowly and taste as you go.
Yes, if you don't have fish sauce or prefer not to use it, you can substitute it with soy sauce. Fish sauce is a potent and salty ingredient, so if you're experimenting with it, add it little by little. If you're making it a sweet dip, you can add a pinch of salt instead of soy sauce to keep that sweet and savory flavor.
The desiccated unsweetened coconut adds texture to the dip. It also helps to thicken up the dip. If you want a thicker dip, feel free to add more.
How to Store Leftover Coconut Dip
Refrigerating: Transfer the leftover dip into a serving bowl or an airtight sealed container. This helps to keep the dip fresh and prevents it from absorbing other flavors in the fridge. You can store the dip in the fridge for up to 5-7 days.
Freezing: Unfortunately, this coconut dip does not freeze well. When frozen and then thawed, it can become grainy and lose their smooth, creamy texture.

Serious yum! Salty, sour, sweet coconut. I'm thinking I will try this with Indian fritters and popadom. Any other suggestions?
Joyce says
I did it with chips. Not sure it was that tasty with chips haha but definitely good with fried chicken and fritters! I even scooped some into my pasta sauces! The coconut cream melts into a oil and gives it a nice flavour!
