Ingredients

  • 2 cups smoked cheddar cheese (shredded)
  • 2-4 slices ham
  • 2 onions (small, sliced)
  • 2 ciabatta buns
  • 2 tablespoon maple syrup

Garlic Butter

  • 2 cloves garlic (finely minced)
  • 4-6 tablespoon butter (soften)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Grate the cheese and put aside
  • Slice the ham and put aside
  • Slice the bread in half and put aside
  • Slice the onions up and caramelize in a pan wit with oil and some butter over medium heat and put it aside to cool

Garlic Butter

  • Finely mince the garlic
  • Soften the butter in the microwave on low for 20 seconds until it is spreadable and warm to the touch
  • Add the garlic into the warm butter and mix it together. Put it aside

Sandwich Assembling

  • Pre-heat a pan to medium heat
  • Spread the butter on the outsides of the bread, avoiding putting the garlic bits on (Remember to flip the top of the bun upside down if it doesn't have a lot of surface area.)
  • Spread the butter on the insides of the bun
  • Sprinkle on cheese on the first layer
  • Lay out the ham in a single layer on the second layer
  • Add the caramelized onions on the third layer
  • Sprinkle on cheese for the fourth layer
  • Drizzle maple syrup over the cheese
  • Add the bread as the last layer and set it in the pan to crisp up
  • Toast the sandwich for approximately 2 mins a side. (Make sure to check it on the 1 minute mark to make sure its not burning. If it looks brown and crisp, flip it over to the other side
  • Enjoy while cheese is gooey and the sandwich is warm

Notes

  • Mix the chopped garlic into slightly warm butter. This cooks the garlic slightly and takes out the sharp garlic bite.
  • When you butter the outside of the bread, don't include the garlic bits. They will burn during the cooking process. It will still have the garlic flavour, since the butter should have the garlic infused into it
  • Switch up the breads and cheeses and have fun with this!
