If you're looking for a unique and exciting twist on traditional salsa, this Asian sweet and spicy pineapple salsa recipe is just the ticket. The sweet, juicy pineapple pairs beautifully with the gochujang, creating a unique flavor combo that’s so seriously good. You need to try it out to know what I mean.

If you're a fan of this easy pineapple salsa recipe, you'll also love my Asian Guacamole, a unique twist on a classic dip. Or, for a heartier dish with a similar sweet and smoky flavor profile, try my Sweet and Smoky Pineapple Chipotle Chili.

Why You’ll Love This Spicy Pineapple Salsa Recipe

    • Quick and Easy: This fresh Asian pineapple salsa recipe is so easy to make! With just a few simple steps, you'll have a delicious salsa ready in just 15 minutes tops!
    • Tasty: The combination of sweet pineapple, tangy lime, and spicy gochujang creates a super tasty flavor that’s out of this world and incredibly flavorful.
    • Asian Flavors: This recipe brings together classic flavors of traditional salsa with a unique twist, thanks to the addition of pineapple and gochujang.

    Key Ingredients

Sweet and spicy pineapple salsa ingredients (tomatoes, pineapple, gochujang, limes, cilantro, green onions)
    • Pineapple: I like to use fresh pineapples whenever I make this spicy pineapple salsa because I find it gives this dish a lot more flavor and texture. That being said, you can also use canned pineapple as well, just make sure you drain the liquid well.
    • Tomatoes: To give this salsa more texture and flavor, I like to add tomatoes as well. My favorite kind to use are baby tomatoes, but any type of tomato will work.
    • Red Onion/Green Onion: To have a delicious salsa, onions are a must. Both red and green onions give a different type of fresh onion flavor. If you want to cut the sharpness of red onions, soak it in cold water for a few minutes after you have diced it before adding it into the salsa.
    • Cilantro: Optional for those who love it, cilantro will add a fresh, herby note to our salsa, making it even more flavorful.
    • Lime: To contrast the sweetness, I use lime juice to give it a tangy kick which brightens up the flavors of all the other ingredients.
    • Gochujang: This Korean hot pepper paste will give our salsa a spicy kick, adding depth and complexity to the flavor profile as well.

    How to Make Pineapple Salsa

Making this incredible spicy pineapple salsa recipe at home is super easy and will give you great results every single time. Here's how to make it step by step:

Chop up the Ingredients: Begin by chopping the pineapple, tomatoes, red onion, green onion, and cilantro (optional) into small pieces. Once chopped, add these ingredients to a bowl.

    Sweet & Spicy Pineapple Salsa

Combine the Gochujang Paste and Lime Juice: In a separate small bowl, mix together the gochujang paste and lime juice until the mixture is smooth and well blended.

Add the Sauce to the Salsa Mix: Pour the sauce into the bowl with the chopped ingredients. Mix everything together until well combined.

    Sweet & Spicy Pineapple Salsa

Refrigerate for at Least 1 hour: Place the salsa in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour. The longer the salsa mingles in the fridge, the more flavorful and well blended it will be.

Enjoy your Pineapple Salsa: After it has been in the fridge for at least 1 hour, your homemade pineapple salsa is ready to be enjoyed! Whether you're using it as a dip for tortilla chips, a topping for tacos, or a side dish for chicken or pork, this salsa is guaranteed to add a burst of fresh, sweet, and tangy flavor to your meal.

Joyce’s Tips For Making the Best Pineapple Salsa

    • Take Out the Spicy Onion Bite With Soaking: If you're not a fan of the strong flavor from raw onions, try soaking them in cold water for a minute after chopping before adding it to your salsa. This simple trick can help reduce the bite and make your salsa more enjoyable.
    • Wash Your Knife After Cutting Fresh Pineapples: Remember to rinse your knife after cutting fresh pineapples, tomatoes, and citrus fruits. The acids from these fruits can dull the blade edges, so a quick rinse can help maintain your knife's sharpness.
    • Opt for Fresh Pineapple: This salsa recipe tastes best with fresh pineapple. However, if you're pressed for time, you can use canned pineapple, just make sure to drain it well. Just remember, fresh ingredients often provide a more vibrant flavor.
    • Let the Salsa Mingle In the Fridge Before You Serve It: As with all salsas, the longer it sits in the fridge, the more flavorful it becomes. Try to refrigerate your pineapple salsa for at least an hour before serving to allow the flavors to blend together.

    Serving Suggestions

    • This pineapple salsa is a great addition quesadillas, and I personally love using it on my crispy lemongrass chicken tacos. Just add a spoon of salsa on top of your chicken or pork filling, and you'll have a burst of sweet and spicy flavor in every bite.
    • For a quick and easy appetizer, serve this pineapple salsa with tortilla chips. The crunchy chips and the sweet-spicy salsa make a perfect pair for a casual get-together or a game night. For a unique Asian twist, you can serve it with crispy wonton chips!
    • Looking for a refreshing salad? Toss this pineapple salsa with some fresh greens and avocado. The tangy lime and spicy gochujang paste in the salsa will act as a dressing, giving your salad a unique twist. It's also a tasty addition to my crispy garlic tofu buddha bowls as well!

    Recipe Variation Ideas

    • Mango: If you're a fan of sweet and tangy flavors, this variation is for you. Simply replace half of the pineapple with fresh mango. The mango adds a tropical twist and makes the salsa taste great.
    • Jalapeno: For those who love a bit of heat, this variation is a must-try. Add a finely chopped jalapeno pepper to the salsa mix. The jalapeno pepper will give your salsa a spicy twist that pairs perfectly with tortilla chips or tacos.
    • Black Bean Boost: For a protein-packed variation, add a can of rinsed and drained black beans to the salsa. The black beans not only add protein but also give a hearty texture to the salsa, making it a perfect side dish for quesadillas or nachos.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use canned pineapple instead of fresh pineapple?

Yes, you can use canned pineapple in this recipe. However, fresh pineapple will give a more vibrant flavor and texture to the salsa. If you do use canned pineapple, make sure to drain it well before adding it to the bowl.

What can I serve this pineapple salsa with?

This pineapple salsa is a versatile side dish that pairs well with a variety of main dishes. It's perfect for serving with tacos, nachos, quesadillas, or even grilled chicken or pork. You can also enjoy it as a dip with tortilla chips.

Is this pineapple salsa recipe spicy?

The spice level of this salsa is adjustable based on your preference. The recipe calls for gochujang, a Korean hot pepper paste, which adds a twist to the salsa. If you prefer a milder flavor, you can reduce the amount of gochujang or omit it altogether.

    Storing and Reheating

    • Refrigerate: Store any leftovers in an airtight sealed container in the fridge. It will maintain its fresh flavor and crunch for up to 3 days.
    • Freeze: Unfortunately, due to the high water content in the fresh ingredients like tomatoes, peppers, and pineapple, this salsa does not freeze well. The texture of the ingredients can become mushy upon thaw.

Girrrrrl! I love fruit salsas! They're honestly one of my go-tos whenever I make spicy fish or shrimp tacos. The sweetness and tartness plays so well with savory flavors. I'm totally going to try this one.

I gotta admit, am not very brave at experimenting with making my own fruit and veggie versions of salsa - but I do so love trying more exotic versions that others make - which leads me to ask you - do you need a taste tester? 🙂

I don't think putting salsa on a salad to replace the dressing is strange at all. I do it all the time. I never thought of putting gochujang in a salsa but I can just imagine the combination of the umami hot with the pineapple being unbeatable. Tacos, spooned on top of a soup. I'm drooling...
